Surfaces of Becoming is a series by Serdar Akdeniz that explores the moment when an image shifts from depiction to material condition. The works do not present landscapes as scenes, but as surfaces shaped by time.

Each piece begins with a precise drawing-based framework that remains concealed, as the visible image emerges through processes of erosion, mineralization, and controlled deterioration.

In this series, the surface is not passive — it assumes agency. Figures recede, spatial clarity dissolves, and what remains is not representation, but the trace of duration.

Rather than dramatizing time, the works operate through restraint. The resulting images exist as temporal fields — not illustrations, but conditions.
