Surfaces of Density is a series by Serdar Akdeniz that explores how urban forms emerge, fragment and persist within the changing condition of aged metal. The works do not depict the city as a fixed image, but examine how buildings, streets and traces of human presence become embedded within surfaces shaped by oxidation, erosion and material transformation.

Each work develops from physical artworks that undergo further digital transformation. Metal is not treated as a background, but as an active field in which corrosion, abrasion and exposed layers alter the appearance of the image. What emerges is therefore both an image and a record of material change, where urban forms appear to develop from within the surface rather than being placed upon it.

Throughout the series, recognizable structures remain suspended between presence and disappearance. Architectural forms persist, yet their boundaries fragment and recede into the layers that hold them. The works consider density not simply as an accumulation of matter, but as a compression of time, place and memory—where what disappears may continue as a trace within the changing surface.
