Surfaces of Habitation is a series by Serdar Akdeniz that explores how architectural fragments persist within the changing condition of aged walls and built surfaces. The works do not depict buildings as complete forms, but examine how eroded plaster, exposed timber, brickwork, rusted metal, and traces of growth preserve the presence of structures whose original functions have begun to disappear.
Each work develops from a physical artwork that undergoes further digital transformation. The wall is not treated as a background, but as an active field in which architectural elements emerge through material traces and shifting spatial relationships. Conflicting planes, uncertain axes, and ambiguous openings unsettle the distinction between wall, depth, and sky, challenging the apparent coherence of architectural space.
Across Aperture, Arc, Bearing, Eaves, Remainder, and Hinge, architectural forms move from the possibility of passage toward the fragments that persist as structural relationships weaken. Generative AI enters this process as a behavioural surface—a field of response shaped by references, instructions, selection, and intervention. The series considers how architecture becomes perceptible through the behaviour of surfaces, and how material presence can endure while the boundaries between structure, space, and perception remain unresolved.
